Tucked away in a cul-de-sac this large, well-proportioned pub with its impressive porch was built by Job Salter in 1824 for quarrymen at a time when Bath stone was extensively mined in the local area. It has a staircase leading directly into the underground quarry from a cellar that has now been restored and opened out for additional seating. In the early days the long-closed Combe Down brewery, was located at the back of the pub. Front door liable to be locked - access via courtyard 2025 - reopened 15 Dec 2025 for drinks. 2 real ales and up to `8 local "craft" beers/lagers and a few local ciders - hoping to start full food service by end Feb 26 check website for actual start 2024 - bought by local publicans and refurbishment started 2021 - Closed and put up for sale
